Which ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Intern Should Get the Boot in Season 20?

The teaser trailer for season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy is full of juicy moments, not least the promise of more hot-and-heavy action between Simone (Alexis Floyd) and Lucas (Niko Terho), as well as the potential for more Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Nick (Scott Speedman). Nick provided another eye-raising moment, though, when he looked at the five new interns and said, “Which one of you am I firing?” with the same chilly, unapologetic effect as Beyoncé (y’all know the moment).

Savage? Maybe. But hey, you gotta be on your A-game at work, especially when work is literally a life-or-death situation, as it is for the Grey’s kids. And let’s face it — while we absolutely adore this batch of newbies and appreciate them for all their strengths, they haven’t exactly been perfect since they started their internships at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Each of them has so much to offer … but they’ve got a little baggage too: Between them, they’ve betrayed a patient’s explicit wish not to be resuscitated, brought their messy personal lives into the hospital, and, oh, yeah, been snogging in the break room!

We’re not saying any of these fine young people should get the heave-ho, but if one of them had to go, who should it be? Let’s have some fun with some educated guesses, shall we?

Simone Griffith

Look, we love Simone (played by Alexis Floyd). Sweet, on top of her job, easy to be around Simone. Everybody loves Simone. But that’s kind of the problem, right? Too many people (ahem) love Simone right now, and her love life is spilling over into her work.

Hooking up on the job! Look, we get it: She’s at that hospital all day and night, sleep deprived, emotionally vulnerable, and hot in the pants like most 20-somethings. But office romances are inherently not kosher, and Ms. Thing not only had a whole fight break out over her at work (kinda jealous, ngl), but she and Lucas also got it on in the intern room! Your job is to contain body fluids, not swap them with your coworker, Simone! You messy, girl! We love to see it, but it’s messy!

Jules Millin

Certainly the most buttoned-up of the bunch, Jules (played by Adelaide Kane) can also be a bit intense — she believes marriage is a distraction, after all. Nobody can blame her really for being so high-strung given her upbringing, but sometimes you really wanna tell her to go find a chill pill in the medicine closet, you know?

Does she even have any? Her Little Miss Perfect vibe can be a lot, but we gotta admit, she is good at her job.

Benson “Blue” Kwan

harry shum jr

Principled and focused, Blue (played by Harry Shum Jr.) is a fine addition to the Grey Sloan staff. He can also be a bit of a know-it-all, right? And OMG, don’t you wish he’d just have a little more swag with Jules and be like, “Hey, girl, we doing this thang or what?” None of that is fireable, though. On what grounds might they have to send him packing?

Mainly that unbelievably inappropriate disregarding of a patient when Maxine requests not to be resuscitated in the season 19 finale and Blue did it anyway. Sure, he saved her life, and sure he had some deeply emotional reasons for doing it, but his actions were a huge violation of protocol and patient rights so … yeah, bruh. Not cool.

Lucas Adams

niko terho

Aw, Lucas (played Niko Terho). He’s so hard not to love (ain’t that right, Simone?). He’s kind and genuine, and really wants to do a good job. Unfortunately, his intention doesn’t always translate into good work. His late-diagnosed ADHD means he’s prone to errors and mistakes, which, in a hospital, can be deadly.

Bro screwed up patients’ names on his first day, almost costing a patient a lifesaving triple organ transplant (oops!), and let’s not forget that dalliance with Simone. You’re skating on thin ice, Lucas!

Mika Yasuda

midori francis

Spunky and resourceful, Mika (played by Midori Francis) very well might be the most A of this type-A bunch. Her storylines about her financial troubles make her easy to root for, and her commitment to fixing her problems is admirable … even if said problems cause her to be distracted at times.

Not many, but she did cause Dr. Altman (Kim Raver) to lose it when Mika, sleep deprived as all get out, made Teddy drop a scalpel in the middle of surgery. And while the consequences haven’t played out yet, her budding relationship with her soon-to-be boss Taryn has “You in danger, girl” written all over it.

We’d hate to see any of these fine professionals hit the bricks, but if there has to be one, the red lights are flashing for Blue.

Do you agree? Who do you think should get a pink slip? Tune in to the season 20 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday, March 14, 2024, to find out if it’s curtains for one of our beloved interns.
