Grey’s Anatomy was renewed for its 20th season earlier this year and should be starting up again once the actors’ strike resolves.

We’re taking a look back at the cast exits that happened during the 19th season, including one you might not be aware of! This post does not include cast members who might be exiting ahead of season 20.

The show likely will look a little different with some of these exits.

Kelly McCreary – Exited

Kelly McCreary left Grey’s Anatomy after 9 seasons!

“After nine seasons, I am saying goodbye to Maggie Pierce and her Grey Sloan family,” Kelly shared in a statement with Entertainment Tonight. “It has been a tremendous honor to be a part of such a legendary television institution as Grey’s Anatomy. I will always be grateful to Shonda Rhimes, Krista Vernoff and ABC for the opportunity, and to the incredible fans for their passionate support.”

She continued, “To spend nine years exploring a character inside and out, while reaching a global audience with impactful stories, is a rare gift. It has afforded me an opportunity to collaborate with, learn from and be inspired by countless brilliant artists both in front of and behind the camera.”

“Playing Maggie Pierce has been one of the true joys of my life and I leave with profound gratitude for every step of this journey,” Kelly concluded. “I am excited for this next chapter, and what the future holds.”

Shorunner Krista Vernoff – Exited as showrunner

In a shocking announcement, Krista Vernoff, the longtime showrunner, announced her plans to exit the show after season 19′s conclusion. You might have forgotten about this pivotal exit, as Krista is not an actor but works behind-the-scenes.

“It has been the privilege of a lifetime to be entrusted to run Grey’s Anatomy for the past six years and Station 19 for the last four,” she told Deadline. “The passion of the dedicated fandoms and the impact that these shows have on hearts and minds cannot be overstated. The amount of talent in these two extraordinary casts and these two brilliant writers rooms is beyond measure — and these crews work magic week after week.”

Ellen Pompeo – Exited as full time cast member

Ellen Pompeo, who has appeared in every season of the show dating all the way back to the first episode of season one, stepped away as a full time cast member. Find out the reason why she exited Grey‘s right HERE!

Her character, Meredith Grey, moved to Boston, where she took a new job working on Alzheimer’s research.

Ellen has promised she will be back to visit, and she has continued providing voice-overs for the episodes.
