Grey’s Anatomy Season 20’s Trailer Sneakily Revealed The Interns’ Fate

Grey’s Anatomy season 20’s full trailer dedicated a good chunk of it to the fate of the interns after the events of the Grey’s Anatomy season 19 finale, but one small blink-and-you-miss-it detail already revealed what’s in store for them. In full Grey’s Anatomy fashion, season 19’s finale ended on a cliffhanger, with Sam Sutton’s death as Simone and Lucas opened him up overshadowed by Teddy’s sudden illness as Mika tried to resuscitate her. The ending left Lucas, Simone and Mika’s fate unknown, with all three involved as the first two had tried to operate and Mika was Sam’s doctor.

Grey’s Anatomy season 20’s full trailer released by ABC on February 29 included plenty of scenes hinting at the interns potentially losing their jobs, with Nick Marsh appearing only admonishing them or at the receiving end of Meredith’s pleas asking for a second chance for the interns. The tension was palpable throughout the trailer, and Mika Yasuda, Simone Griffith and Lucas Adams’ unfortunate fates seemed already set in stone. However, one small detail appearing very briefly early in the trailer sneakily revealed the interns’ fate, and, more precisely, what punishment they didn’t have to face in Grey’s Anatomy season 20.

Arizona’s Lecture In The Trailer Showed The Entire Class Of Interns Present

Bailey’s enthusiastic presentation of Arizona Robbins’ lecture might have obscured which students she was encouraging to “take a seat and learn something,” but two blink-and-you-miss shots actually showed the entire group of interns introduced in Grey’s Anatomy season 19. Simone, Lucas, Jules, Mika and Benson can all be seen being encouraged to sit down by Bailey first and attentively participating in the lecture later, proving they are all still employed by Grey Sloan Memorial at the time of Arizona’s lecture. Simone’s different hairstyle even shows some time must have passed from the events of the Grey’s Anatomy season 19 finale.

However, the incontrovertible proof of the interns not being fired actually came from Jessica Capshaw’s Instagram post announcing her return as Arizona Robbins, where she can be seen donning her scrubs. Indeed, the post’s caption only mentions a date, “04.04.24,” falling on the third Thursday after Grey’s Anatomy season 20’s premiere on March 14, 2024. With all the drama and investigations probably unfurling in Grey’s Anatomy season 20’s premiere, this would put the interns safe and sound, and still employed at Grey Sloan Memorial by Grey’s Anatomy season 20, episode 4 when Capshaw is due to guest star as Arizona.

Grey’s Anatomy S19 Finale’s Intensity Already Hinted The Interns Wouldn’t Be Fired

Throughout Grey’s Anatomy’s twenty seasons, plenty of interns have been fired or suspended for fatal mistakes. However, Grey Sloan Memorial also proved to have a history of being lenient with some of its interns, and Meredith Grey’s stellar career despite her many fireable offenses is proof of that. The peculiar and impossibly intense situation in which Mika, Lucas and Simone found themselves at the end of Grey’s Anatomy season 19 already hinted at their fate being favorable.

After all, the trio not only had followed the correct procedure by calling ulterior attendings, but they also only tried to help Sam, knowing he would have died had they not intervened. At the same time, Mika was handling another emergency, with Teddy collapsing and having a cardiac event right before she was to perform surgery on Sam, making the situation all the more impossible. This all hints the interns might get away with a suspension or even just a warning, especially considering the incredibly more problematic situations past interns had put themselves in in previous Grey’s Anatomy seasons.
